What is a cataract?

A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye's natural lens that interferes with light passing through to the retina. Cataract sufferers usually describe the condition as being similar to looking through a waterfall or a piece of wax paper with a gradual blurring or dimming of vision.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

Reading may become more difficult and driving a car can actually become dangerous. Cataract sufferers may also be troubled by a bothersome glare, halos around lights, or even double vision. As the cataract becomes worse, frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions may become necessary.

What is the treatment for cataracts?

Once they form, there is only one way to achieve clear vision again, and that is to physically remove the cataract from inside the eye and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Someone suspecting they may have a cataract should see Dr. Gottlieb for proper diagnosis and documentation.

How can I prevent cataracts from forming?

Exposure to harmful chemicals or excessive amounts of ultraviolet (UV) radiation may result in the formation of cataracts. This means that it is important to wear safety goggles when working with chemicals. Most important is to wear ophthalmic quality sunglasses that block 100% of UV A and B rays. Since cataracts are cumulative it is also very important to protect your children's eyes with ophthalmic quality sunglass.
