What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma occurs when the aqueous humor does not drain out of the eye. Undrained fluid causes pressure to build within the eye. The structure of the eye changes to accommodate the change in pressure. This results in irreversible damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the main carrier of visual information to the brain. Damage to the optic nerve results in a loss of vision.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Many presentations of glaucoma are asymptomatic (has no obvious symptoms) and can only be diagnosed by a doctor of optometry such as Dr. Gottlieb. As with most eye diseases, the earlier glaucoma is detected the more vision can be protected.

How is glaucoma treated?

The most common first line treatment of glaucoma is usually a prescription eye drop that must be taken regularly. In some cases, laser therapy or surgery may be required. The goal of the treatment is to prevent loss of vision.

Will my vision be restored after treatment?

Unfortunately, any vision loss as a result of glaucoma, is usually permanent and cannot be restored. This is why regular preventative eye examinations with Dr. Mark A. Gottlieb is so important.

Can glaucoma be prevented?

No, but early detection and treatment can control glaucoma which reduces the chances of permanent vision loss.
